Creative Process

Watching an artist create is always a fascinating process. Every artist approaches art and art making in unique ways. This photo of artist, Dean McCready was taken at an artist retreat in Conifer, Co.  Dean uses music as part of his creative process. He has specific music that he listens to that facilitates his creative juices.

When you’re falling, Dive

These photos were taken shortly before and immediately after my friend Sunny gave birth to her daughter Iris. I’m currently reading When you’re falling, Dive by Mark Matousek, which talks about how fear and pain can awaken us from a slumber of indifference and provoke extraordinary growth. I felt like childbirth is a perfect example of this and the photos themselves illustrate the terror and enlightenment of such extreme situations.

Equal Rights

In the Summer of 2007, I was invited to show my DisClosure film and photography series at the San Francisco Sex Workers Art and Film Festival. During the week of the festival, sex workers from all over the country protested an ordinance that targeted them. They took to the streets and peacefully protested in their own way. We then went down to city hall and spoke to city officials about the ordinance. It was amazing how open they were to listening to the concerns of sex workers in their districts.

Casa Bonita

This is the last photo of a series of photos chosen by friends using random numbers. This image was chosen, in part by my younger brother, Josh Ball with the # 360.

Casa Bonita is a landmark in Denver. Every kid who grows up here has to go there at least once. The food is terrible and the entertainment is for kids but it’s always fun to watch the kids having a great time. It’s also a place for teenage kids to get some performing experience in the elaborate set. Every half hour or so they come out and perform some skits that involve diving into their indoor pools. The movement in this piece is what made me choose it for today’s entry.

As we head into the new year, many of us will have resolutions of getting into shape.  I am personally sore from a P90x workout that we’ve been doing. This photo of runner 1054 was taken during the Colfax Marathon near the capitol building in Denver in 2006.
