The Wolf & The Wolverine

Jonathan Edward Balfour used to be a cat person.  Growing up, the songwriter spent a lot of time at cat shows, primping and fluffing felines with names like Oro Ojos Cruz Bernal of Katsamust.

These days, Jonathan is making a name for himself at different kinds of shows as the front man for the indie band The Wolf & The Wolverine.  Here, Jonathan strikes a balance between his best-in-show styling and the intense, feral instinct that drives his music.

We captured this image during the photo shoot for his album cover Levity.

Walleye Run

The Walleye Run in the Maumee River in Toledo, Oh is a big event each year. It’s so big, Toledo has named it’s professional hockey team, The Walleyes, who are actually in the playoffs right now. Each year the Walleye come up the Maumee river to spawn and it attracts hundreds of fisherman each year. At peak times, you can see fisherman of all ages, sexes and races fishing shoulder to shoulder. Some fish waste deep in the water with their waders, nets and stringer lines and some fish from small boats in the middle of the river.  Despite the method, most leave with at least one fish on their line.

It’s also great business for local bait vendors and sports equipment retailers. There is a certain set of gear that it seems all fisherman must have. Those who don’t have the proper gear look awkward and amateur.

This shot was taken at dawn near Sidecut Park in Maumee, Oh.

This portrait of Denver fashion designer, Armando Guerra says so much about him. We shot his in his studio on his mirror wall. His space is as colorful and creative as his design.

Only Mondo can make so many colors, textures and patterns work in one look. I love this professorial portrait.

Birthday of a Muse

Today is the birthday of  my friend Felix. I met Felix for coffee today and we talked about photography, our history as friends and our futures.

For years, Felix was my main model. Any time I wanted to shoot photos, he was there, ready and willing.  He was open to new ideas and often had ideas of his own. Since then, Felix has been shooting many photos himself. He’s grown so much as a person and as an artist over the years. This post is dedicated to him.
