Equal Rights

In the Summer of 2007, I was invited to show my DisClosure film and photography series at the San Francisco Sex Workers Art and Film Festival. During the week of the festival, sex workers from all over the country protested an ordinance that targeted them. They took to the streets and peacefully protested in their own way. We then went down to city hall and spoke to city officials about the ordinance. It was amazing how open they were to listening to the concerns of sex workers in their districts.

The Spoils of the Season

2010 not only marks a new decade in history, but a new decade in my life–I turn 40 today.

Taking pictures of trash may seem like a strange way to commemorate it, but when your birthday follows a frenzied trail of torn wrapping paper, confetti, and abandoned Christmas trees, the images offer a different perspective.  The trees that once symbolized the season, glowing with lights and shiny ornaments, are now tossed unceremoniously alongside dumpsters.   The discarded trees mark the close of the holidays, the beginning of a new year, and reveal a glimpse into the staggering spoils of the season.

Layers

This photo was chosen, in part, by a random selection by Shawn Britt with the # 123.

This piece was shot on the back wall of The Other Side Arts. Back in 2002-2003, we allowed local graffiti artists to use the back of our building to create pieces. In this photograph you can see the many layers of paint as they chip away. I shot it with a selective focus lens with a Canon 20d.

Lisbon, Portugal

This photo was chosen, in part, by a random selection by Michael Cruson with the # 223.

In 1993 my love for photography was born when my partner and I traveled Europe for 6 months in a VW bus. This photo was taken at night in the streets of Lisbon, Portugal. Jesse was in bed sick with food poisoning and our new friend, Gedo took me on a night time stroll of this magical city. This is one of the photos that made me think about photography seriously.

Making Friends

This photo was chosen, in part, by a random selection by Sharon Meriash with the # 3.

This photograph was a study for a series of drawings I did for a class at MSCD. The assignment was to tell a story through a series of 9 drawings. In this story, the duck was stuck in a tree and rescued by the wooden man. After the rescue, they go swimming together, go for ice cream and the last image is this one of the new friends in bed together.

Film Jar

Copyright 2009 Jeff Ball

This jar of film has lived in my refrigerator for years. Earlier this year, I decided  to produce a body of work based on what’s on the film. What is on the film? I have no idea. I look forward to exploring the mysteries that it holds.

As we move more and more towards a completely digital world.  I hope to do my part in keeping film alive.

The Other Side Arts (TOSA) was my passion, my home and my life for the last 8 years. TOSA has given me more than I ever dreamed when I began this adventure. As I say goodbye, I’d like to leave TOSA with a gift befitting my love for the artists, volunteers, staff and board.

In 2005 TOSA was generously given a building in a new arts district by the City of Aurora. TOSA transformed a former police sub-station into a thriving art community of artists, students, volunteers, and arts lovers.

Unfortunately, the roof hasn’t lasted as long as predicted and TOSA had several costly water incidents that threaten artists space and work. The City of Aurora has offered a challenge grant of $30,000 to help replace the roof (Thank You!), but TOSA needs to raise over $7000 to unlock the grant. You can help

For a limited time only, I am offering prints of a select few images to raise money for something that is near and dear to my heart, The Other Side Arts. Every image has some connection to TOSA. For $20 plus $3 shipping, you can own an original piece of art and help put a roof on the Aurora location of TOSA. I’d love to leave the organization that gave so much to me with a small token of my appreciation. Help me reach my goal to sell 100 prints to help TOSA.

Key to communication
Key to communication

The configuration of the original typewriters has given us an essential tool for everyone to communicate with each other. We have learned the letters and their locations so that we can write without ever looking at the keys themselves.  We have developed muscle memory and never have to think about where the keys are located. Our minds can wander as out fingers record our thoughts. This classic typewriter creates nostalgia in an object that we use in every day life.
